Facial Rebalancing With HA Filler at The Refinery

By Dr. Mark Christensen

Most people think of filler as something that adds volume: fuller lips, plumper cheeks. Facial rebalancing works differently. The goal is proportion.

A face reads as balanced when the forehead, nose, cheeks, chin and jaw relate well to each other. When one feature is a little under-projected, the others can look larger or heavier than they really are.

A small, well-placed amount of filler in the right spot can bring the whole face into harmony, often without touching the feature you were focused on.

We use hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers for this work. HA is a sugar your body already makes, and HA fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if needed. That reversibility is a big reason they're the standard for structural work.

Non-surgical rhinoplasty

A liquid rhinoplasty uses small amounts of filler to reshape the nose without surgery. It can smooth a dorsal hump by filling the areas above and below it, lift a drooping tip, or straighten the look of a nose that sits slightly off-center.

It cannot make a nose smaller. What it can do is change how the nose catches light, and that changes how it reads. There's no downtime from surgery, and you see the result before you leave.

The nose has a dense network of blood vessels, so this is one of the most technically demanding areas to inject. It belongs in experienced, medical hands.

Chin augmentation

The chin is often the quiet key to a balanced profile. A chin that sits a little back can make the nose look more prominent and the neck less defined.

Filler placed deep along the chin bone adds forward projection or length. In profile, that one change can make the nose look smaller and the jawline sharper. It's one of the clearest examples of rebalancing: treat one feature and the whole face shifts.

Cheek and jawline: structural support

As we age, we lose bone and fat in the midface and along the jaw. The skin hasn't changed much, but the scaffolding under it has. That loss of support is what creates deeper smile lines, early jowls and a softer jawline.

Instead of filling those lines directly, we restore support where it was lost:

  • Cheeks: filler placed high on the cheekbone lifts the midface and softens the folds below it

  • Jawline: filler along the jaw and at its angle below the ear creates a crisper edge and a cleaner transition to the neck

Done well, people notice you look rested and defined. They don't notice filler.

Temporal hollowing

The temples are one of the first places to hollow with age, weight loss or intense training. Hollow temples cast a shadow that makes the face look narrower, the brow heavier and the person more tired than they feel.

Restoring the temples is subtle work. Most people can't say what changed, only that the upper face looks softer and more youthful. It also helps frame the eyes and supports the outer brow.

Scar revision

Some scars sit below the surrounding skin: rolling acne scars, small post-injury divots, or depressions left after a procedure. They catch shadow, which makes them look deeper than they are.

Filler placed beneath a depressed scar lifts it level with the skin around it, so it stops catching shadow. For tethered scars, filler is often paired with subcision, a technique that gently releases the fibrous bands pulling the scar down. Raised or discolored scars need a different approach, and we'll tell you honestly if filler isn't the right tool.

Why your injector matters

Structural filler is anatomy work. The nose, temples and jawline all sit near important blood vessels, and safe placement depends on knowing exactly what lies beneath the skin.

Every filler treatment at The Refinery is performed by Dr. Mark Christensen, an emergency medicine physician. That means:

  • Anatomy-first planning, with depth and technique chosen for each area

  • Hyaluronidase on hand at every appointment, so HA filler can be dissolved quickly if ever needed

  • A plan built around your whole face, not a single syringe in a single spot

Most people see some swelling or small bruises for a few days. HA results typically last from about 9 months to 2 years, depending on the area and the product.

Start with a consultation

Rebalancing starts with a conversation, not a syringe. We'll look at your face as a whole, talk through what bothers you, and show you where small changes would make the biggest difference. If filler isn't the right answer, we'll say so.
